PRELIMINARY TASK
The genre of our practice music video
The song which we selected for our preliminary task was AfterGlow by Ed Sheeran. The song AfterGlow comes in the Pop genre. The word Pop comes from popular. The Pop genre was discovered In the mid-1950s in the United States and the United Kingdom. Pop music covered rock & roll as well as the youth-oriented forms. It influenced even during the 1950s and 1960s. This video includes a one-take performance on an acoustic guitar played by Ed Sheeran himself. Pete Seeger an American folk artist and a social activist says " pop music is a professional music which draws upon both Folk music and fine arts music both''
we selected this genre because it is one of the popular genres and most of the major hits are from the pop genre.
idea and narrative construction
We'll be shooting our preliminary video in the college. The original video is actually shot in a hilly area and we can see hills and greenery behind Ed Sheeran. Due to this, we decided to shoot our music video outdoor where we can show Greenery and plants behind and shoot our video in natural lighting. Originally, the video is shot at an outdoor location video so we will also shoot it outdoors. We will make the video in one shot in total so it's easier to sync the song with the video while editing. As this music video is totally performance-based video so it will have shots showing just the Artist and his Instrument with a hint of the background. In short, Our main focus will be on the artist and not on the background. As it's our first time our main aim is to practice shots just as they are in the video. There'll be Close-ups of the artist and his Instrument which will be a guitar, mid shots of the artist and the instrument, close-up shots of the guitar with a dolly shot. It will also have low-angle shots of the artist while he's playing the guitar. Lighting in the video will be natural. We'll place the artist in such a position in which sunlight will fall on his right side of the face so it will add a glare effect naturally in the video. We will be doing the shoot around 11 Am in the morning as the sun at that time is not too bright. We need soft sun rays not the harsh ones for the shoot. For the props, we just need a stool chair and a guitar. As in the original video, the only prop the artist has is a guitar and is sitting on a bench. The performer will be dressed casually as in the original video. Our model will be wearing a jacket and a white shirt under it.

auditions
For the auditions, we asked two of our models to send a video recording of them while singing the song with proper expressions.

EDITING
Editing for the preliminary music video wasn't a tough task as the whole video was in one continuous shot and the natural light was just the right amount which meant that there were no complications of fixing the lighting etc.

LEARNING OUTCOME
Going through the production process of our preliminary project and making mistakes helped us to learn techniques and stuff we couldn't learn any other way. Our teacher had always told us to aim high but to keep a grounded approach when it came to filming and shooting music videos on whole. Last year, making a magazine was totally different than what we had stepped into now and required advance skill. There were a lot of things that we learnt throughout the process of making our preliminary video. We had never imagined that getting the right cast for a music video was just as important as the other factors, not doing efforts to get a good model can make your video unattractive to the viewer and they would not feel the urge to watch the music video completely. The most important thing which we learnt was that the model should have the lyrics perfectly memorised or else you will have to do a lot of retakes and give the model some breaks in between to memorise the lyrics. This delays the production process and one already has limited time. Also you will have difficulty while editing and syncing the song with the video. The overall effect looks really bad and the video looks disrupted. One more thing that we learnt was that it is not at all necessary to keep the camera moving at all times and it honestly depends on the beat of the song. Fast camera movement and shots wouldn't compliment a slow song, you need to stay calm and have a proper grip on the camera or else the shot would be shaky. We used iphone 11 pro for this video and realised that a phone is much easier to grip in the hands and handheld camera shots look natural in performance based videos. We hope to learn from the mistakes that we have made during our preliminary and use them as an encouragement rather than feeling discouraged. As, we have a long way to go and have too create our final music video.
