research: codes and conventions of the selected genre of the music video

The pop genre is one of the most popular and famous genres of many music genres. This is the genre I love listening to and I've watched dozens of pop music videos. After I searched about the codes and conventions of the pop music videos I've learnt many things.

After watching most of the pop music videos I can clearly see that most of the time there are the same shots. Shots like closeups, mid shots, extreme closeups are shown so that the expressions of the artist can be seen easily as the expressions of the artists add energy to the video songs. An example of this is AfterGlow by Ed Sheeran. In this video song, there are closeups and mid shots of ed Sheeran showing the expressions and energy in him. The camera work in this song is very simple and classy. Camera work in pop music videos also depends on the number of Artists in a video. If the artist is a solo performer there'll be more mid shots and closeups and if there's a pop band then there'll be wide-angle shots too so that the whole band could be shown in the video. Some pop music videos just have simple movements, dance moves, and showing an artist moving here and there and enjoying.

Now if we talk about the editing of the pop music videos. After watching videos and doing research I found out that editing of shots needs to match the beat or the music. The shots sometimes change with the beats. Then comes the lip-syncing part. This is one of the major parts of editing. If the lip-syncing isn't on point the video won't look natural at all and will not be appealing. I've noticed in a few pop music videos that even the lighting is bright the video has low-key lighting. This is due to the editing of colour contrasts and low-key lighting adding a whole new vibe to pop songs it the beat is slow.

Mise En Scene: In the pop music videos the costumes are bright and have high contrast makeup. In most of the pop videos, the costumes which females wear are revealing clothes in which they are seen as sexual objects. We have an example of Lady Gaga here she wears revealing clothes in most of her videos. The backgrounds and settings of the pop music videos can be done by showing artificial scenic beauty. They mostly have low-key lighting. An example of low-key lighting video is Attention By Charlie Puth.

The props depends on what type of video it is. Mostly there are very simple props in the videos.
